Meet Barbara Wright
Teacher | Huntington Station, NY
Barbara Wright originally started her career in business but was inspired to change to a more soul-fulfilling field in order to make a difference in the world. After a stint as a Junior Achievement mentor, Barbara’s decision to become a teacher was an easy one. Currently a 5th grade teacher, Barbara has changed the lives of many students not only at Birchwood but also within the community.
Barbara managed the painting of a bright, colorful mural below a railroad and pedestrian overpass on Route 110/New York Avenue. She coordinated with local artists to provide guidance to the students in painting the mural, which extended beyond 280 feet. The bridge serves as a hub linking two communities, beautifying the area, and, most importantly, connecting two school districts and bringing students together. The project not only fostered pride in Barbara but in her students as well. “Everything that you see, all of the elements were drawn by the kids,” Barbara said. “I can tell you the kid who drew that flower, that boat, that lighthouse. They are taking complete ownership. They are so committed.”
