Small Changes Make a Big Difference

A new look and new content makes Britannica’s Pathways: Science more engaging than ever! Pathways: Science uses an inquiry-based approach to help middle school students tackle tough science concepts. These are topics that students consistently struggle with like understanding what causes the earth’s seasons or why some objects sink while others float.
What makes Pathways unique is the way students work independently, using their critical thinking skills to reach the correct conclusion about these tough topics. Central to this process is a variety of resource types—texts, videos, images, and graphs—that build science literacy skills alongside conceptual understanding.
Pathways: Science has been redesigned to make it easier for teachers to identify and use these rich resources with their students. Each lesson is displayed in a thumbnail that clearly identifies the topic and resources.
Teacher notes identify different reading levels for the articles so that teachers can point students to the best resources for their abilities and learning styles. From there students can work independently, freeing teachers to work with students who need more help.
Once in a lesson, students will find new content types and guided reading questions to support their independent learning. Next to each resource, students will find specific questions to help them collect and interpret data.
They are also asked to apply what they learn to the larger concept and demonstrate their understanding in writing. In this way, students build both the science knowledge and the science literacy skills they need to read, understand and communicate about science.
Pathways: Science doesn’t simply provide answers. Instead, students follow the same process—Predict, Investigate, and Conclude—in every lesson, making their own decisions throughout the process, and supporting their thinking with evidence.
These small changes make a big difference in helping students discover and evaluate a wide variety of resources on their own. More than ever, Pathways: Science is a great way to have students work at their own pace to build critical thinking and science literacy skills, all while building core science knowledge and comprehension!
